JBL HDI-3800 Floorstanding Speaker Review

My musical tastes are highly diverse, and my love of music has been passed on to my daughter, who got her B.S. In violin performance and music education before being switching gears and then going on to graduate from Harvard Law. Although the majority of my extended group of friends and family prefer hobbies such as hunting, fishing, football games, etc., I’ve found that I still greatly enjoy time with my audio system and discovering new music. At some time in the fairly near future, my hearing will decline and I’ll no longer be able to listen analytically.

While $5,000 for the HDI-3800 couldn’t be considered budget by any means, it is when comparing them to their Everest DD67000 ($75,000) or their K2 S9900 ($44,000). While you may not get the same level of performance out of their HDI range as you do with their expensive flagship models, you do get trickle-down technologies and knowledge that come from engineering such speakers. The boxes have unpacking instructions on the outside, and if you follow them, it is a straightforward experience. The JBL 4349 Studio Monitors instantly revealed a problem with my system that I’d previously been unaware of. Something in my streaming system (Ethernet switch?) was causing a low-level repetitive noise about every seven seconds.

Over 10% off Boombox 2

In the early 2000s, I had my first book published (I’m now working on my third). A few years ago, the Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity website issued a call for authors. Over the years, I’ve published a number of equipment reviews and am honored, in 2019, to be given the title of “Senior Editor.” But none of the above offers the “why” of my interest in home audio.

That said, JBL tends to have a more even sound quality out-of-the-box compared to Sony's speakers. It's a portable Bluetooth speaker with a boombox-style design and a built-in carrying handle to help you bring your favorite tunes with you on-the-go. Thanks to its versatile performance, it's suitable for listening to lots of different types of audio content, whether you're at home or outside on your porch.

The loop is permanently affixed to the speaker and is convenient if you want something you can hang up and forget about for an afternoon. Though the loop is a bit small, it’s definitely big enough to hang off a shower caddy. And speaking of engineering, the JBL HDI series are designed and engineered in their world-famous acoustic engineering facility in Northridge, California. Extra Features - Link over 100 JBL Connect+ enabled speakers together to amplify the party.

The fabric covering most of the JBL GO 3 brings just the right amount of texture so it’s always easy for you to grip. The JBL GO 3 is a cheap and simple Bluetooth speaker built to handle whatever outdoor excursion you want to throw at it. It's a pretty feature-light product, but it works well, the IP67 rating means it's great for the beach or the trails.

This speaker also functions as a colorful mood lamp even when the music is turned off, so it’s truly a two-in-one device. Even if you aren’t on the go, this speaker still looks great sitting out on a table. And despite its compact size, the audio performance is solid and surprisingly loud.

It is important to note that the quality of a speaker will not be comparable if you are comparing two different speakers from the same company. Check out our recommendations for the best Bluetooth speakers, thebest speakers for parties, and the loudest Bluetooth speakers. There is no 3.5mm port for wired listening, nor can you use the USB-C charging port for audio. Also new to the JBL GO 3 is a fabric loop for hanging the speaker from a hook, or clipping it to a bag.

The JBL Flip 4 is made to withstand water, warmth, and overall good times that will last all night long . This brand began with the mission of providing the masses with better audio for their favorite radio stations. With all those points in mind, we’ll move this JBL speakers review into the most important part – the speakers . Now a standard for movie theaters, concerts, and radio equipment in addition to more portable avenues, this company is well-known for their quality and durable builds. You can do the same with the towers, but it is a lot more trouble than the smaller speakers, and I think it may be something like $75 each (instead of $10/ea.) for towers. If you come across any other variants of this speaker, let us know in the discussions, and we'll update the review.

While Bose offers great bass, their quality doesn’t always hold up for louder plays. Blast your beat with a lengthy battery life that can not only support 20 hours of playing time but will also charge any devices on the go. Through a handy USB outlet, this Bluetooth speaker will give juice to any phone or tablet and keep the music going for longer. The speaker's ideal for karaoke, with inputs for microphones and guitars built into its frame, as well as extra karaoke settings and effects in its app. Its big size may not be ideal for everyone, though, even with its telescopic handle and wheels to help you transport it to your next gig. If you want a party speaker that's a little smaller, check out the JBL PartyBox 110.

Listening Sessions

From the Time-Life Series “Folk Years” comes the box set “Simple Song of Freedom.” One of the tracks from disc eight of the set is “The Whistling Gypsy” by Leo & Patrick McGuire. This is another of those relatively simple songs, performed live, that has the potential to out any tendency toward boxiness that a speaker may have. Despite this, the Whistling Gypsy on the JBL 4349 Studio Monitors sounds far more open and uncolored than the previously mentioned Otmar Liebert and Joni Mitchell music.

Its BassBoost feature also lets you control how much boom you add to the mix, which is nice, and there's also a graphic EQ in its companion app. It gets really loud and has customizable RGB lights built in to add to the ambiance at your next event. If you're looking for a more affordable option, consider the JBL PartyBox Encore Essential. This portable Bluetooth speaker is actually designed with parties in mind, but it's still a suitable choice for cranking out your favorite tunes while at home. Its stylish design brings excitement to your next event, with a circular RGB light ring that you can customize to suit the mood through the JBL PartyBox app. There's even a microphone input if you want to host a karaoke session, as well as some extra party-centric features through its companion app.

JBL PartyBox 310

Voices and lead instruments are clear and present in the mix, and there's plenty of rumble in the bass to bring genres like EDM and hip-hop to life. Plus, there's a graphic EQ to switch up its sound, as well as a Bass Boost feature if you really want to shake the room with your favorite tunes. It gets plenty loud, but with a battery life of a little over eight hours, it doesn't last quite as long off a single charge as the JBL Boombox 3. It isn't quite as suitable for outdoor use, either, since it can't float in water. Still, if you just want a powerful speaker to crank up the music indoors, it's a really solid choice.

JBL’s HDI-3800 loudspeakers offer up a great blend of “fun” and “audiophile” characteristics that will appeal to a wide audience of music fans. When the shipment arrived at my house, I was happy to see that the boxes weren’t of the couch-sized variety that I have been used to receiving over the years. Getting speakers into the house and down a flight of stairs gets challenging at times, even with the help of my 20-year-old son. Each they’re definitely not “light”, but their size isn’t enormous or overwhelming. A similar test might be any of the acoustic music on, for example, the Joni Mitchell album “Clouds”.

I didn’t know what the ‘flux stabilization ring’ was, so I asked JBL about that. JBL explained that the flux stabilization ring is a shorting ring that stabilizes the magnetic field created by the motor magnet from modulations due to the opposition field generated from the voice coil’s movement. These higher-excursion woofers use a cast basket for a more stable structure than would be had with a stamped steel basket of less expensive designs. I wasn’t able to get a close look at the bare drivers since a trim ring covers the frame screws, and I wasn’t sure I could remove the trim ring without damaging it. Portable party speaker with powerful 100W sound, built-in dynamic light show, and splash proof design.
